Term | Definition |
---|---|
Political Party | A group of individuals with common interests who organize to nominate candidates for office, win elections, and conduct government so they can determine public policy. |
Democratic Party | A major party in the United States that has liberal views. |
Republican Party | A major party in the United States that has conservative views. |
Third Parties | Minor parties that usually do not win elections but that may influence public policy. |
Two-Party System | When two main parties have the power to conduct government. |
Liberal | A set of beliefs that supports a larger role for the federal government, more social programs funded by the government, and more government regulation of the economy. |
Conservative | A set of beliefs that supports more traditional moral or religious values, more power for state governments, and a limited role for the federal government in the economy. |
Platform | A political party's beliefs or positions on public issues. |
Plank | A political party’s goal or objective on a specific public policy issue. |
Candidate | Someone who runs for a political office. |
Majority Vote | More than 50% oft he votes. |
Primary Election | Elections in which members of political parties choose their party’s candidate to run for office in a general election. |
General Election | Elections in which voters elect, or pick elected officials. |
Partisan Election | Elections in which candidates are identified with the party next to his or her name. |
Non-partisan Election | Elections in which candidates are not identified with a party next to their name |
Political Action Committees | Political organizations that take money from the members of an interest group to make donations to candidates and parties. |
Voter Registration | Officially adding a person to the list of eligible voters. |
Voting Districts | Small area created by state or local governments to administer elections. |
Precinct | A voting district or an area in a county or town containing a specific number of voters. |
Polling Place | The physical place where you vote. |
Ballot | A list of candidates from both parties up for election for different offices. |
Board of Elections | The organization that oversees voter registrations and administers elections. |
Exit Poll | Questions asked of voters after they have voted to get an unofficial idea of who will win an election. |
Electoral College | A group of electors who officially elect the president and vice president. |
Voting Districts | Small area created by state or local governments to administer elections. |
Redistricting | Redrawing political voting districts. |
Gerrymandering | When one political party draws voting districts that give their party an advantage. |
Referendum | A way for citizens to approve or reject a state or local law. |
Local Act | A law passed by the General Assembly that only applies to, or effects, a small number of local governments or counties. |
Annexation | When a city expands to include new territory. |
Grassroots | The ordinary people of a community or members of an organization who join together to take political action. |
