Term | Definition |

Political Party | A group of individuals with common interests who organize to nominate candidates for office, win elections, and conduct government so they can determine public policy. |
Democratic Party | A major party in the United States that has liberal views. |
Republican Party | A major party in the United States that has conservative views. |
Third Parties | Minor parties that usually do not win elections but that may influence public policy. |
Two-Party System | When two main parties have the power to conduct government. |
Liberal | A set of beliefs that supports a larger role for the federal government, more social programs funded by the government, and more government regulation of the economy. |
Conservative | A set of beliefs that supports more traditional moral or religious values, more power for state governments, and a limited role for the federal government in the economy. |
Platform | A political party's beliefs or positions on public issues. |
Plank | A political party’s goal or objective on a specific public policy issue. |
Candidate | Someone who runs for a political office. |
