Caribbean studies

1. locating the caribbean 1-2

QuestionAnswer
Before we can attempt a meaningful study of the society and culture of the Caribbean it is necessary to Define & locate the region we will be studying because the society & culture of people define and locate where they live more than some physical or geological feature , such as water that surrounds them or mountain range that separates them from other ppl
how we locate and Define the Caribbean region 1. look for common historical links and similar heritage 2. common deep structures /processes eg-the caribbean plate 3. only include lands washed by the Caribbean Sea 4. countries perceived to have a common destiny eg-the AC
a geographic basis for delimiting the Caribbean region it's a familiar idea. It is based on the concept of a ''Caribbean basin'' where the central identifying feature is the Caribbean Sea , rimmed by Islands and the mainland territories of Central and South America
Caribbean region -land wash by the Caribbean Sea -West Indies
how we use coordinates to locate the Caribbean region we use coordinates such as lines of latitude and longitude to locate the region. eg- Caribbean stretches from 60° to 90° . these are the approximate coordinates used in defining the Caribbean
geographical delimitation of the Caribbean is not fixed since the limit is debatable since the approximate coordinates used in defining the caribbean shows the region as stretching from near the equator to beyond 25° N. & the idea of the caribbean basin & even the coordinates of latitude and longitude are interpreted subjectively
we must be careful to distinguish between island and continental countries and not overly generalize as in ''the islands of the Caribbean'' eg- the territory of Belize in Central America is a large landmass that is considered to be as ''Caribbean'' as any of the islands
Archipelago a chain of islands that is usually closely related at a Subterranean level
eg of archipelago -the Lesser Antilles forms a chain of small islands that exhibit similar volcanic features -the Greater Antilles is an older archipelago of much larger islands -Bahamas
the water bodies found in the Caribbean and its environs are the Caribbean Sea the Gulf of Mexico Atlantic Ocean
the Pacific Ocean is close to the Caribbean at the isthmus of Panama
isthmus a narrow neck of land separating 2 water bodies
why is the Pacific Ocean considered to be part of the environs of the Caribbean a isthmus separates the caribbean sea from the pacific sea so it is considered to be part of the environs of the caribbean
