Geo Politics

Devolution Breaking up of a state into smaller units OR the passing of power from central to lower governments (Spain, Catalonia)
Ethnic Separatism When an ethnic groups desires to separate from the larger group
Ethnic cleansing Process in which more powerful ethnic group forcibly removes/kills a less powerful one in order to create an ethnically homogeneous region

Balkanization The process by which a state breaks down through conflicts among its ethnicities
Independence movement Effort by people to create a new sovereign state in a place inside or another state (Devolution failed) Think Spain, Catalonia
Autonomous region Regions that have a HIGH degree of self-government and freedom to govern themselves (example Native American Reservations)
Semi-autonomous Region Have a MODERATE degree of self-government and freedom to govern themselves (Example Hong Kong and Macau)
