Constitutional Safeguards and Limitations
| Term | Definition |

| Freedom of Religion | Cannot break the law or hurt another in the name of a belief system. |
| Freedom of Speech | Cannot speak words that are dangerous or threatening and may cause harm or panic. Slander (False spoken statement) intended to cause damage to one’s reputation. |
| Freedom of the Press | Libel (False published statement that is damaging to a person’s reputation.) |
| Freedom of Assembly | Cannot meet, gather or come together on private property or trespass. Cannot throw things or become disruptive. |
| Freedom of Petition | Marches, picketing, obtaining signatures, or protests must be peaceful and obey Laws. Permits must be obtained if necessary. Cannot become a riot. |
| The right to bear arms | Not guaranteed to children and felons. Must have proper license and be approved for private ownership. Not all types are protected (grenades, bazookas, missiles, etc.) Restricted in certain areas (schools, courthouses, airplanes, etc.) |
| Protection from unreasonable searches and seizures | Must have search warrant or probable cause. |
| Eminent Domain | Can take if public need is more important. Landowners must be fairly compensated. |
| Right to Trial by Jury in civil cases | Value must be more than $20. |
| No excessive fines or bail (money posted by the accused to guarantee appearance in trial) | The punishment/$ must fit the crime. Amount may be withheld for criminals charged with very violent crimes that may be dangerous to society. |
