abolish to put an end to something
abolitionist person who fought to end slavery
fugitive a person who breaks a law and runs away from a place or hides
plantation a large farm. Most specialize in one main crop, such as cotton.
political party a group of people who share similar ideas about government and work to change it
armory a building where weapons are kept
border state a state that supported slavery but did not secede from the Union in the Civil War
secede to leave or break away from something
cavalry a fighting force mounted on horses
enlist to join the military
