Ancient Greece

TermDefinition
agora A central area in Greek city-states used both as a marketplace and a meeting place.
acropolis A large hill in ancient Greece where city residents sought shelter and safety in times of war and met to discuss community affairs.
Democracy A system of government in which citizens vote to make governmental decisions.
Monarchy A government ruled by a King or Queen.
Oligarchy A type of government in which a small group of citizens control decision making.
Aristocracy A government controlled by a few wealthy people.
citizen A person with certain rights and responsibilities in his or her community.
polis A city-state in ancient Greece.
peninsula An area of land almost entirely surrounded by water.
island An area of land completely surrounded by water.
harbor A sheltered place along a coast used to protect boats and ships.
colony A territory that is under the control of another country.
