The American Revolution
Term | Definition |

ally | a nation that joins another nation in some common effort, such as fighting a war |
American Revolution | the struggle of the colonies in North America to gain their independence from Great Britain |
Continental Army | the American army during the American Revolution |
crucial | very important or necessary |
democracy | a system of government in which the power to govern belongs to the people |
issuing | to supply or make available |
rebellion | a violent attempt to resist or overthrow the government or another authority |
strategy | an overall plan, such as for winning a war |
prospect | the chance that something will happen |
mercenary | a soldier who fights for whoever pays them |
guerrillas | soldiers that are not a part of a regular army, who practice irregular fighting techniques |
Battle of Long Island | Inexperienced Continental army went up against the British in New York, Americans lost over 1,400 troops while the British lost 377, Washington is forced to retreat |
Battle of Trenton | The Continental Army crossed the Delaware River in the middle of the night to surprise attack the Hessians, marking first major success of the Americans, no troops lost and 868 Hessians captured |
Battle of Princeton | After a win, the Americans attacked this town due to their high morale and previous win, captured 300 British troops in New Jersey |
Battle of Saratoga | Marks the turning point of the war, this battle occurred when General Burgoyne was supposed to meet General Howe in Albany but Howe doesn’t show up, Burgoyne is forced to surrender |
Winter at Valley Forge | The Continental Army struggle to survive the spreading of disease and the cold here, and finally get help from two Europeans who purchase supplies and train the army |
Battle of Yorktown | This battle involved a siege, with the French and Continental Army surrounding the British by land and by sea, resulted in the British surrender of the battle and of the Revolutionary War |
