Marbury v. Madison Court case in which the Supreme Court ruled that it had the power to decide whether laws passed by Congress were constitutional
Louisiana Purchase the vast territory extending from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains
smuggling the act of importing or exporting goods in violation of trade laws
expedition a long voyage of exploration
Embargo Act a law that imposed a total ban on foreign trade
embargo a ban on trade
impressment the practice of forcing people into military service
judicial review the power of the Supreme Court to declare a law unconstitutional
War Hawks the members of Congress from the South and the West who called for war with Britain prior to the War of 1812
Treaty of Ghent Treaty that ended the War of 1812
Battle of New Orleans the last battle of the War of 1812; led by Andrew Jackson, and ended in a U.S. victory against Britain
nationalism a devotion to one's nation and its interests
sectionalism loyalty to a state or section rather than to the whole country
Monroe Doctrine President Monroe's policy warning European nations not to interfere in Latin American
American System a program for economic growth that called for high tariffs on imports
creole a person born in Spain's American colonies to Spanish parents
Adams-Onis Treaty treaty in which Spain agreed to sell Florida to the United States
Treaty of Greenville treaty that stated native Americans gave up land that would later become part of Ohio
