Europe History Part 1

TermDefinition
Gold, God and Glory motives for explorers during the Age of Exploration. "God" =the desire to spread and expand Christianity. "Glory"=greater power and a larger empire. "Gold" = the attainment of gold, silver, and other precious stones for greater wealth.
Scramble for Africa the period between 1885 and 1910 when European countries divided control of the African continent among themselves.
World War I (The Great War) (1914-1918), was the first modern global conflict. It involved most of Europe, the United States, Canada, and many parts of Africa and Asia.
Treaty of Versailles one of the peace treaties signed in 1919 at the end of World War I. It ended the war between Germany and the Allied Powers (mainly United States, British Empire, France, Italy, Japan, and other Allied Powers).
Militarism The building up of military power and adopting warlike attitudes.
Alliances An agreement between 2 countries to defend one another from attack, which sometimes pulled other nations in to war.
Imperialism European countries competed to extend their empires by seizing territory to add to their colonies in Africa and Asia.
Nationalism Devotion to one’s nation or people, sometimes led to hostility toward other nations.
The Great Depression A deep, worldwide economic slump that resulted from the stock market crash in the USA in 1929. It lasted through the 1930s and caused hardship around the world.
Slump A marked decline.
