Holocaust | The mass murder of Jews by the Nazis during World War II. The Nazis murdered 6 million Jews and 5 million people from other groups. |
Marshall Plan | A U.S. recovery plan, passed in 1948, that offered money to help Western Europe rebuild their countries after World War II. |
European Union | (EU)-created in 1992 as an economic and political partnership among 27 European countries. |
Communism | An economic and political system in which the state, run by a Communist Party, takes over industry and farmland and controls most organizations. |
Capitalism | An economic system in which people and companies make most economic decisions and own most of the property. Government plays a secondary role. |
Soviet Union | Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (U.S.S.R.), former Communist country in Eastern Europe and northern Asia which was established in 1922. The USSR included 15 other republics such as Russia, Ukraine, and East Germany. |
Superpowers | a powerful influential nation with a bloc of allies; specifically the United States and the Soviet Union during the Cold War. They were perceived as the two most powerful nations in the world. |
Cold War | A long period of hostility between Communist the Soviet Union and the democratic West (USA). |
Iron Curtain | the boundary dividing the Eastern Bloc countries (Communist) and Western Bloc (Democratic) countries during the Cold War. |
Berlin Wall | A wall built by the East German government in 1961 to divide East and West Berlin; this wall came to symbolize Cold War divisions. |
German Reunification | the process in 1990 in which the divided Communist East Germany and Democratic West Germany reunited to form the democratic nation of Germany as a result of the end of the Cold War. Berlin also reunited into a single city. |
