| Hunter-gatherer | People who roamed the land hunting for food and gathering plants |
| fertile | good ability to produce new crops |

| surplus | having more than you need |
| specialization | when people train to do a specific job such as making pottery or sewing clothes |
| technology | advancements in the way things are done to make a job easier to do. |
| artifact | an object from the past that can be studied to find out how people lived during a particular time in history |
| geographer | a person who studies geography (land) |
| archaeologist | a person who studies the objects/artifacts left by people in the past |
| society | a group of people living together |
| domestication | to use animals in a working environment |
| tool | an object used for work |
| cultivate | prepare and use (land) for crops or gardening. |
| irrigation | the supply of water to land or crops to help growth, typically by means of channels. |
| sedentary | tending to spend much time seated; somewhat inactive. |
