Political Process (Part 1)

What are the four functions of political parties? recruit and nominate candidates, educate the electorate about campaign issues, help candidates win elections, monitor actions of officeholders
What are similarities between political parties? organize to win elections, influence public policies, reflect both liberal and conservative views, appeal to the political center
What are the differences between political parties? stated in party platforms and reflected in campaigning
third parties introduce new ideas or press for a particular issue, often revolve around a political personality
How can someone evaluate campaign speeches, literature, and advertisements for accuracy? separate fact from opinion, detect bias, evaluate sources, identify propaganda
What are the roles of mass media in elections? identify candidates, emphasize selected issues, write editorials, create political cartoons, publish op-ed pieces, broadcast different points of view
Liberal more open to change; left side of the political spectrum
Conservative focus on traditional values; right side of the political spectrum
platform a list of a party's beliefs
bias leaning one way
propaganda Ideas spread to influence public opinion for or against a cause.
media newspapers, radio, TV, internet, etc.
editorial An article giving opinions or perspectives
op-ed piece OPinion EDitorial (emphasis on personal opinion)
What is the definition of a two-party system? A political system dominated by two major parties
What two parties dominate American politics? Republican and Democratic Parties
What are examples of third parties in American politics? Green and Libertarian
