Angel Island Where Chinese immigrants entered. This place opened in 1910.
Old Immigrants Were 1880s people from the north of Europe. These are Irish, Roman, Catholics, and more.
New Immigrants Were 1880s people from the south and the east of Europe. These are Greeks, Italians, Chinese, Japanese, Mexicans, and more.
Settlement Houses Poor areas that offered accommodations. Private organizations would usually help them.
Jacob Riis Writes about the other half lives.
Tenements They basically have no windows, no lights, bathrooms or no sanitation and the place was clustered. Caused diseases.

Chinese Exclusion Act Banning the Chinese from immigrating to America for 10 years. This was the first time a nationality cannot enter the States.
Steerage Was where most passengers were. They got cramped and hot.
Assimilation Immigrants were able to blend into America's culture. Old immigrants had an easier time blending into America's culture.
Trachoma A disease that affects your eyes.
Processing Stations They took a long time to accept immigrants into their country because of several exams.
Legal Problems If you said your name is something else that´s not on the sheet you could get in big trouble.
Money A decent amount can get jobs. The rest are poor and were clustered in buildings like the others.
Christian Charities Blue Coast was one of the schools that had it.
Percentage that did not get into Ellis Island 2 Percent
Percentage that did not get into Angel Island About 18 Percent
1882 Immigration Act Tax of 50 Cents. They blocked weird and bad people from getting in.
Urbanization Making a place more urban. Ex: Industry
Race New and Old immigrants did not look a like.
Natives were not accepting of Religion differences.
Literacy Tests Given to see if immigrants could see and write.
New York State Tenement House Act 1901 Required better ventilation and running water for new buildings.
How did cities respond to the problems? New sewage and water purification systems. Hiring full-time firefighters and police.
Henry Street Settlement (NYC) Lillian Wald – Nurses in public schools
Hull House Rundown building turned into settlement house.
Ethnocentric Group of people who think their culture or religion is superior. Americans feel they are the best.
Ghetto Many people living in the same area who practice the same religion, have similar socio- economic status, same culture and background. Little Italy - Italian, ChinaTown- Chinese, Lower East Side - Jewish
