| AFL | American Federation of Labor, was one of the first federations of labor unions in the United States. It was founded in Columbus, Ohio in 1886 by Samuel Gompers. |
| Big Business | any large business enterprise |
| Gilded Age | which was marked by the growth of industry and wealth which supported materialism and political corruption (coined by Mark Twain) (coined by Mark Twain) |
| Progressivism | tried to break down the division of classes, both politically and socially. Encouraged the government to get involved. |
| Populism | representation of the common person, the working class, the underdog. |
| Tenements | Low-income housing buildings where immigrants typically lived in poverty |
| Ellis Island | an island in upper New York Bay: a U.S. immigrant examination station. |
| Merger | The combining of 2 or more firms into 1 corporation, either done by choice, or one company buys the other. |
| Knights of Labor | 1860-Uriah Stephans Tried to unite all workers into 1 union no matter of race, gender, etc. Didn't like strikes, believed that workers should negotiate with employers. |
| Grange | An association of farmers founded in the United States in 1867 |
| Monopoly | A commodity or service controlled by one corporation. |
| Corporation | any group of persons united or regarded as united in one body |
| Sherman Anti-Trust Act | declared monopolies and trusts illegal |
| Suffrage | the right to vote |
| Breaker Boys | a worker in the United States whose job was to separate impurities from coal by hand in a coal breaker. |
| Muckrakers | People who search for and expose real or alleged corruption, scandal. |
| Vertical Integration | ownership of business involved in each step of manufacturing |
| Horizontal Integration | ownership of many companies making the same product |
| Tammany Hall | the most famous political machine, located in NYC. An organization linked to a political party that often controls local governments. Had Irish origins and Democratic ties. |
| Social Darwinism | Only the best survived in society, wealth and power were signs of fitness and that mankind benefited from intense competition and removal of the weak and unfit. (Herbert Spencer) |
| Piece Work | describes types of employment in which a worker is paid a fixed "piece rate" for each unit produced or action performed. |
| Settlement Houses | Places that helped immigrants assimilate into American society by providing them with food, clothing, and shelter. |
| Robber Barons | term used to describe business owners who often exploited their workers and used unfair business practices to get ahead. |
| Nativists | the policy of protecting the interests of native inhabitants against those of immigrants. |
| Graft | the acquisition of money, gain, or advantage by dishonest, unfair, or illegal means. |
| Political Machines | organizations linked to political parties that often controlled local governments. |
