Road to Revolution

French and Indian War Conflict over the Ohio River Valley between the French, their native allies and the Colonists and British.
Proclamation of 1763 Law that limited westward movement to the Appalachian Mountain range. Colonists were angry bc they fought in the war to be able to move into the Ohio River Valley, won and now are told they can't move there.
Treaty of Paris 1763 Ended the French and Indian War
James Otis Boston lawyer that represented colonists accused of smuggling. First to say "Taxation without representation is tyranny"
Sugar Act 1764 reduced tax (3 pence) on sweeteners like sugar and allowed customs officers to use writs of assistance and send people to vice admiralty courts
Writs of Assistance document that allowed for homes and businesses to be searched for smuggled goods ( no evidence needed)
Vice Admiralty Courts Courts without juries... people had to prove their innocence
George Grenville Former Prime Minister William Pitt's plan to end the French and Indian War lead to to large debt and now GG is tasked with creating a plan to pay it off.
Salutary Neglect period of time when England loosely enforces their rules and law upon the colonies causing them to feel very independent
Virtual Representation The idea that the colonies didn't need to vote or represent themselves but England did it for them.
Stamp Act 1765 Tax on all printed materials (paper)
Declaratory Act 1766 Repealed the Stamp Act and declared the king could pass any laws or taxes that he wanted to
Townshend Acts Tax on ALL imported goods (paper TEA clothes ink etc)
Boston Massacre An event when colonists were harassing soldiers that resulted in the deaths of 5 colonists and a lot of propaganda
Propaganda The manipulation of information to sway opinions
Sam Adams A great agitator and propagandist. Fought to Colonial rights. Started the Sons of Liberty and Committees of Correspondence.
Thomas Paine Wrote Common Sense which helped change colonists minds and made them think that independence was the solution to their problems with England
Protest To go against something
Boycott refuse to buy
repeal to cancel
Tea Act Forced the colonists to buy only tea from the British East India Trade Company
Daughters of Liberty Made homespun fabrics and burned tea in protest
Boston Tea Party Sons of Liberty dressed as Mohawks natives and poured 342 crates of tea into Boston Harbor to protest the continued tax on tea and the passing of the Tea Act
Intolerable/Coercive Acts Boston punishment for the Tea Party. Boston Closed, Harbors closed, and no gatherings until tea paid for
