QuestionAnswer
Colony A community ruled by another country, not by its own people.
Conquistador A Spanish explorer who came to the Americas in the 1500s and claimed large areas of land for Spain.
Contagious disease A sickness that can pass quickly from one person to another as germs are spread by touch or through the air.
East Indies Southeast Asia, including India, Indonesia, and Malaysia.
Northwest Passage The supposed route across the northern part of North America that Europeans were looking for but never found.
Why did everyone want to find a faster route to the East Indies? They were looking for spices.
Which explorer explored what is now the southwestern United States? Coronado
Why did many explorers want to find the Northwest Passage? They were looking for a faster route.
Who fought for the control of Florida? Spain and France fought for the control of Florida.
Which river did La Salle explore? Mississippi
What was Juan Ponce de León looking for? Gold, silver, and the Fountain of Youth
What was the first permanent settlement in the New World? St. Augustine
Why did the Spanish attack Fort Caroline? they were looking to take control of the area. (Florida)
Who was Hernán Cortés fighting against? The Aztecs
How is a colony different from other places in which people settle? It is ruled by another country, not by its own people.
Why did many American Indians die from contagious diseases? They were exposed to diseases that spread quickly.
