Chapter 7 More Perfect Union Vocabulary Flashcards.

TermDefinition
Bicameral having two branches, chambers, or houses, as a legislative body.
Republic. form of government in which a state is ruled by representatives of the citizen body.
Ordinance. a piece of legislation enacted by a municipal authority.
Depreciate. diminish in value over a period of time.
Depression. Depression is a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest.
Manumission. release from slavery.
Proportional. A proportional relationship is states that they are the same.
Compromise: A compromise is a way of settling differences by everybody making concessions.
Federalism. Federalism is a mixed or compound mode of government that combines a general government
Legislative Branch. The legislative branch is in charge of making laws. It is made up of the Congress and several Government agencies.
Executive Branch. the branch of government charged with the execution and enforcement of laws and policies and the administration of public affairs.
Electoral College. (in the US) a body of people representing the states of the US, who formally cast votes for the election of the president and vice president.
Judicial Branch. The judicial branch is in charge of deciding the meaning of laws, how to apply them to real situations, and whether a law breaks the rules of the Constitution.
Check and Balances. Checks and balances, principle of government under which separate branches are empowered to prevent actions by other branches and are induced to share power.
Amendment Federalist. Amendment to the United States Constitution defines the American version of “federalism,” the system by which the legal powers of governance are divided between the federal government.
Anti-Federalist. The Antifederalists were a diverse coalition of people who opposed ratification of the Constitution.
