Republic | a government having a chief of state who is not a monarch and who in modern times is usually a president |
Ordinance | a law set forth by a governmental authority |
Depreciate | to lower in honor or esteem |
Depression | a state of feeling sad |
Manumission | the act or process of manumitting especially : formal emancipation from slavery |
Proportional | a number or quantity in a proportion |
Compromise | settlement of differences by arbitration or by consent reached by mutual concessions |
Federalism | the distribution of power in an organization (such as a government) between a central authority and the constituent (see CONSTITUENT entry 2 sense 1) units |
Legislative Branch | the branch of government having the power to make laws; the legislature. |
Executive Branch | the branch of government charged with the execution and enforcement of laws and policies and the administration of public affairs; the executive. |
Electoral College | a body of electors |
Judicial Branch | the branch of government charged with the interpretation of laws and the administration of justice; the judiciary. |
Check and Balances | a system that allows each branch of a government to amend or veto acts of another branch so as to prevent any one branch from exerting too much power |
Amendment | the process of altering or amending a law or document (such as a constitution) by parliamentary or constitutional procedure |
Federalist | an advocate of federalism |
Anti-Federalist | a person who opposed the adoption of the U.S. Constitution |
