Geography Vocabulary

plateau an area of high, flat land
tributary A stream or river that flows into a larger river
gulf part of a large body of water that extends into a shoreline, generally larger and more deeply indented than a bay
bay part of a large body of water that extends into a shoreline, generally smaller than a gulf
inland port port on an inland waterway, such as a river, lake, or canal, which may or may not be connected to the ocean.
port a place where ships load and unload their goods
lake a large body of water surrounded by land
peninsula A piece of land that is surrounded by water on three sides.
river large natural stream of water that runs through the land
island a piece of land surrounded by water
plain a large area of flat land with few trees
elevation The height of land above sea level
fertile Able to produce good crops
range a group of mountains
eroded worn away by water over time
rugged (adj.) rough, irregular; severe, stern; strong; stormy
*SYNONYMS:* rocky, blunt, harsh, hardy, tough
*ANTONYMS:* smooth, flat, soft, mild, tender, delicate
mouth of a river the place where a river empties into a larger body of water
region an area of Earth distinguished by a distinctive combination of cultural and physical features
Geography the study of the earth's surface and how people interact with it (can also include climate, countries, industries, and products)
harbor a sheltered place along a shoreline where ships can anchor safely
hemisphere half of the earth
basin a low place in the surface of the land, usually with a body of water occupying the lowest part
river system a river and all of its tributaries
border a boundary line that separates two places
cartographer a person who makes maps
hill rounded area of land that is higher than land around it
mountain an area of land that rises high above the land around it
sea large body of water completely or partly surrounded by land
ocean largest bodies of salt water on earth
