Populist a person, especially a politician, who strives to appeal to ordinary people who feel that their concerns are disregarded by established elite groups
gilded covered with gold leaf that can disguise something cheap
monopoly a company that controls the industry
Boss Tweed "boss" of Tammany Hall
Tammany Hall the political club that ran the New York City Democratic party
Credit Mobilier railroad scandal, railroad made a company that did nothing but was suppose to build the railroad (the mobilier company), the railroad paid this company with gov. money,
Jim Crow racial segregation laws imposed in the 1890s
graduated income tax taxed people at different incomes at different rates
Political Machine a strong party organization that can control political appointments and deliver votes.
voter fraud illegal interference with the process of an election
Whiskey Ring Scandal tax officials stealing on liquor
Civil Service Act established the tradition and mechanism of permanent federal employment based on merit rather than on political party affiliation (the spoils system).
Grange A social movement that turned political with Farmers' Alliances. The Populist Party emerged to represent agrarian interests at the national level.
