| Inflation | a decrease in the value of money in relation to goods, causes prices to rise. |
| muckrakers | name given to writers of the era, they attempted to expose corruption in politics and industry |
| corruption | dishonest or fraudulent conduct by those in power, typically involving bribery |
| Populist | a person, especially a politician, who strives to appeal to ordinary people who feel that their concerns are disregarded by established elite groups |
| gilded | covered with gold leaf that can disguise something cheap |
| monopoly | a company that controls the industry |
| Boss Tweed | "boss" of Tammany Hall |
| Tammany Hall | the political club that ran the New York City Democratic party |
| Credit Mobilier | railroad scandal, railroad made a company that did nothing but was suppose to build the railroad (the mobilier company), the railroad paid this company with gov. money, |
| Jim Crow | racial segregation laws imposed in the 1890s |
| graduated income tax | taxed people at different incomes at different rates |
| Political Machine | a strong party organization that can control political appointments and deliver votes. |
| voter fraud | illegal interference with the process of an election |
| Whiskey Ring Scandal | tax officials stealing on liquor |
| Civil Service Act | established the tradition and mechanism of permanent federal employment based on merit rather than on political party affiliation (the spoils system). |
| Grange | A social movement that turned political with Farmers' Alliances. The Populist Party emerged to represent agrarian interests at the national level. |
