Hammurabi's Code First written law codes in Babylon, using harsh punishments An eye for an eye
Pharaoh A king of ancient Egypt, considered a god as well as a political and military leader
Cultural Diffusion The spread of ideas, customs, and technologies from one people to another
Monotheism Belief in 1 god
Cuneiform A form of writing developed by the Mesopotamians using wedge shaped symbols etched into clay tablets.
Fertile Crescent Fertile floodplain located between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers in Ancient Mesopotamia.
Neolithic Revolution Around 10,000 BC- turning point from hunting and gathering to farming. Led to the rise of civilization.
Civilization A society where you stay in one place. With cities, a central government, job specialization, and social classes living.
Hieroglyphics Egyptian writing that involved using pictures to represent words.
Dynasty A ruling family
Mandate of Heaven (Dynastic Cycle) Ancient Chinese belief that a dynasty earned its right to rule from the Gods.
Ethnocentrism Belief that one’s ethnic group is superior (better) than all others
Ziggurats Stepped tower made of mud bricks. It is associated with religious ceremonies and used as a center of government in Mesopotamia.
