| Mesoamerica | the southern part of North America, including Central America. |
| empire | a variety of territories and groups of people controlled by one government. |
| pueblo | a community of Native American groups living in the Southwest. |
| woodlands | an area that is largely covered by trees. |
| boundary | a line that separates the territory of one group from that of another. |
| confederacy | an organization of groups that band together for a purpose. |
| drought | a long period when almost no rain falls and crops are not able to grow properly. |
