vocab for the industrial revolution

TermConnection
Sabotage Sometimes people would sabotage the machines and they would intentionally hurt or stop the strikers
Monopoly When the goods are in high demand the company will lower it's prices which would cause other companies to lower their prices which would then eventually kick out the weaker companies
Union In the industrial sector (Made up of companies that make or sell things) organized labor unions fought for better wages, reasonable hours and safer working conditions
Corporation The corporations impacted how the people made a living for themselves because now they were no longer depending on the earth for a profit, they now have goods and products to sell
Stock The colonies developed joint-stock companies which were forerunners of modern corporations
Trust Trust and corporations managed the manufacturing of raw materials such as coal, iron, and oil
Collective bargaining Negotiating between employers and workers usually through a labor union
Telegraph Telegraph improved the standard of living, An example is railroads they used telegraphs a lot because they needed to be able to communicate instantly
Interchangeable parts It allowed relatively unskilled workers to produce large numbers of weapons quickly and at lower cost, and made repair and replacement of parts infinitely easier
Division of labor The separation of a work process into a number of tasks, with each task preformed by a separate person or group of people
Child labor Child labor was very common at the time because industrial cities and towns grew fast (because families were looking for work in the new developed factories and mines) the children were forced to work in harmful conditions with long hours and low pay
The Bessemer Process It was the transformation of steel making faster and cheaper
Steam boat Robert Fulton invented the steam boat and it made an easier way to transport goods and people, with the steam boat and steam power it expanded potential factory locations, allowing factories to be located near cities,rivers, and coastal ports
Cotton gin It was important because it increased cotton usage and helped increase cotton in the U.S and made cotton into a profitable crop. Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin
Battery Alessandro Volta invented the battery. The battery opened up a lot of possibilities being able to transport energy
Pasteurization It was the process of heating milk to destroy potentially harmful pathogens and it increases the length of time you can keep it before it spoils. Louis Pasteur invented pasteurization
Photograph Nicephore Niepce invented photography, It was important because when people went out to travel they had a way to come back and show people new ideas and what they saw
Stethoscope It helped doctors to obtain vital clues to patient's condition, Rene Laennec invented the Stethoscope
