Reconstruction Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Reconstruction The rebuilding and healing of the country
Amendment A change or addition
Impeachment The bringing of charges of wrongdoing against an elected official by the House of Representatives
Carpetbaggers Northerners who went to the South after the Civil War to start businesses and make money
Segregation The division of groups of people, usually by race
Black Codes A group of laws passed in the late 1800s that denied African American men the right to vote, kept African Americans from owning guns or taking certain types of jobs
13th Amendment Abolished (ended) slavery
14th Amendment Made all citizens equal before the law
15th Amendment Gave all male citizens the right to vote
Sharecropping A system in which someone who owns land lets someone "rent" the land to farm it
