Reconstruction Vocabulary

| Reconstruction | The rebuilding and healing of the country |
| Amendment | A change or addition |
| Impeachment | The bringing of charges of wrongdoing against an elected official by the House of Representatives |
| Carpetbaggers | Northerners who went to the South after the Civil War to start businesses and make money |
| Segregation | The division of groups of people, usually by race |
| Black Codes | A group of laws passed in the late 1800s that denied African American men the right to vote, kept African Americans from owning guns or taking certain types of jobs |
| 13th Amendment | Abolished (ended) slavery |
| 14th Amendment | Made all citizens equal before the law |
| 15th Amendment | Gave all male citizens the right to vote |
| Sharecropping | A system in which someone who owns land lets someone "rent" the land to farm it |
