Government

Types of Government

TermDefinition
Government A system of governing a society
Democracy A system of government where every person has one vote and the majority rules.
Representative Democracy A form of government where the people elect other people to make governmental decisions for them. This is how the USA governs itself.
Authoritarian A form of government in which state authority is imposed onto many aspects of citizens' lives.
Military Dictatorship This is where one military person runs the entire country. Anything they say is law. Hitler of Nazi Germany and Kim Jong Ill of N. Korea are examples of dictators.
Oligarchy This is a system of government where a small council or group of powerful people run a country. China and the old Soviet Union are examples of and Oligarchy.
Military Oligarchy A system of government where a council of military generals makes all the rules and laws. It is an oligarchy made up of military generals.
Monarchy A system of government where the leader is of a country is chosen based upon their lineage and blood line. Kings and Queens are Monarchs and they rule until they die.
Theocracy A government based upon the majority religion in the country. All laws come from the religious text and the leaders are the religious leaders.
Economies Systems of distributing wealth, money, and resources.
Communism A system of distributing wealth where the government, typically one political party, decides who gets what and how much they can get. Typically, there is no private ownership and things are shared equally while claiming to make progress toward a higher social order. China is communist. Also, called a command economy because the government commands it.
Socialism It is a system of distributing wealth where the government owns and controls all the key industries of the country. It seeks a more just and equitable distribution of property and labor; in actuality, most socialist governments have ended up being no more than dictatorships over workers by a ruling elite.
Capitalism A system of distributing wealth, where Supply and Demand decides who gets what and how much they get. There is private ownership of goods, and things are acquired based upon doing it yourself. Also, called Free Market Economy. The USA is Capitalist economy.
Fascism A political philosophy, movement, or regime that exalts its nation and, often race, above the individual and that stands for a centralized controlling government headed by a dictator. It has severe money laws, forces people to believe the same thing, and uses force against anyone who does not follow the government.
