| ballot | Paper or electronic form that lists candidates or issues; how citizens vote |
| candidate | Individual running for office |
| Electoral College | Established by the Constitution, this group of electors selects the President. |
| popular vote | Total number of votes |
| Primary Election | Based on popular vote, this narrows down the field of candidates to one for each political party (and sometimes an independent) |
| Platform | Political party's positions on different issues; what they stand for |
| General Election | Held on the 2nd Tuesday in November, this is when citizens make their choice for President/Vice President |
| National Convention | Each political party holds this event to officially nominate their candidate for President |
| Political Party | Organization of people who share similar ideas about how to govern |
| Independents | Third party politicians such as the Green Party |
| Republican | Political party with a conservative platform, often described as being 'right wing.' |
| Democrat | Political party with a liberal platform, often described as being 'left wing.' |
| Inauguration Day | January 20th; when the President officially begins his/her four year term |
