American Imperialism

TermDefinition
Analyze To break something down into its parts and closely examine the parts, to determine meaning.
Connections a relationship in which a person, thing, or idea is linked or associated with something else.
Perspectives a particular attitude toward or way of regarding something; a point of view
Developments happenings or incidents over time
Historical context the details that surround an occurrence, including the social, religious, economic, and political conditions that existed during a certain time and place. Basically, it's all the details of the time and place in which a situation occurs.
Era a period of time that is associated with a particular quality, event, person, etc
Imperialism When one, more powerful nation exercises political or economic control over smaller or weaker nations.
Isolationism a national policy where a country decides to avoid involvement in world affairs--Think Switzerland
Annex to take; to add on
Hawaii A cluster of islands in the Pacific Ocean that was once an independent nation but later was annexed to become a part of the United States.
Philippines An island in the Pacific just southeast of China that was originally a colony of Spain but was acquired by the United States after the Spanish-American War. It is now its own country.
Alaska purchased from Russia for 7.2 million; source of gold and other resources
Cuba was once a colony of Spain; gained its independence after the Spanish-American War but was forced to “allow” the United States to have a military base in Cuba
Puerto Rico this was once a colony of Spain but was acquired as a territory by the United States after the Spanish-American War
Panama Canal a waterway made by the United States that extends across the country of Panama connecting the Pacific and the Atlantic Oceans
Oppression the use of power in a cruel way towards a weaker person, group, or country
Territory an area that is completely controlled by another country, considered a possession
Spanish American War A war between Spain and the United States. The United States won and gained possession of Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines. Cuba was granted its independence after this war.
Yellow Journalism writing which is dramatized, biased, and often false and used to attract readers
Battleship Maine This ship was a show piece of the US Navy in 1898 and was sent by President McKinley to the hostile territory of Cuba to protect American citizens. While in Cuba, there was an explosion that destroyed the Maine and killed 260 American people. Americans were outraged and wanted war declared on Spain. (It was later found that this in-fact was an accidental explosion.)
Open Door Policy John Hay’s proposal that called for the establishment of equal trading rights to all nations in all parts of China
Alliance A formal agreement between two or more countries in which they cooperate (get along with each other)
McKinley A United States President who sent the Maine to Havana, which led to the start of the Spanish American War
Roosevelt A United States President who was a big supporter of the building of the Panama Canal and who also believed in negotiating peacefully with other nations, but “always carried a big stick.”
Taft A United States President who believed in only interfering in other nations if the United States’ economy was threatened; believed in the dollar diplomacy foreign policy
Wilson practiced “moral diplomacy”, promoting democracy in other nation to ensure peace and avoid war
