Spirit of Independence Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Taxation process of collecting money from citizens in order to fund government expenses
Militia a military force made up of ordinary citizens
Sons of Liberty an organization of people who protested the taxes and rallied for colonist rights.
Boycott to refuse to buy items in order to show disapproval or force acceptance of one’s items.
Repeal to cancel an act or law
Civil Disobedience the use of nonviolent protests to challenge a government or its laws.
Treaty of Paris 1763 ended the French and Indian war, giving up Canada and lands east of the Mississippi River and Florida.
Patriot an American colonist who favored American Independence
Loyalist an American colonists who remained loyal to Britain and opposed the War for Independence
Grievance complaints or wrong doings against the British Government and the King.
Ratify approve officially
Treaty of Paris 1783 recognized American independence from Great Britain, promised to withdraw all British troops, extended the boundaries North to Canada and west
