Spirit of Independence Vocabulary

| Taxation | process of collecting money from citizens in order to fund government expenses |
| Militia | a military force made up of ordinary citizens |
| Sons of Liberty | an organization of people who protested the taxes and rallied for colonist rights. |
| Boycott | to refuse to buy items in order to show disapproval or force acceptance of one’s items. |
| Repeal | to cancel an act or law |
| Civil Disobedience | the use of nonviolent protests to challenge a government or its laws. |
| Treaty of Paris 1763 | ended the French and Indian war, giving up Canada and lands east of the Mississippi River and Florida. |
| Patriot | an American colonist who favored American Independence |
| Loyalist | an American colonists who remained loyal to Britain and opposed the War for Independence |
| Grievance | complaints or wrong doings against the British Government and the King. |
