Constitutional Principles Vocabulary
| Term | Definition |

| Popular Sovereignty | belief that government is subject to the will of the people. |
| Checks and Balances | allows each branch to check to make sure one branch doesn’t have too much power |
| Republic | powers held by the people and executed through elected representatives |
| Limited Government | government with limited power strictly defined |
| Individual Rights | principle that recognizes people’s fundamental rights. |
| Separation of Power | powers are divided among different branches of government to make sure no one is powerful. |
| Implied Powers | powers not enumerated (listed) in the constitution but suggested in the language. |
| Judicial Review | power to judge whether actions of branches are constitutional. |
| Due Process | rules and procedures that the government must follow when taking actions against citizens. (Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happiness) |
| Federalist | a person who supported a new Constitution and supported a strong national government. |
| Anti-Federalist | a person who opposed a new Constitution and did not support a stronger national government. |
| Federalist Papers | series of essays written by A. Hamilton, J. Madison and J. Jay argued for ratification of the Constitution. |
