Reasons and Consequences

QuestionAnswer
Mercantilism The economic theory that states that a nation's power is based on their wealth and resources. Forced nations to compete and colonize new lands to get an advantage over each other. (favorable balance of trade)
Columbian Exchange A two way exchange, of goods, animals, people and ideas, on both side of the Atlantic that resulted in many things including increased slavery and the spread of diseases.
Protestant Reformation A religious movement that started when the German Catholic Priest, Martin Luther, turned away from & protested the ways of church for being corrupt. Many left the church to follow in his teachings and a new faith, the Protestant faith, resulted.
Indulgences Money that people could pay to the Catholic church to have their sins absolved.
Northwest Passage An all water route from Europe, northwest, to Asia. Many explorers searched for this but it does not exist. Many land was explored and settled as a result.
Protestant Someone that turned away from the Catholic Church to follow the Bible very strictly.
Charter A document that gave a person or group permission to explore, settle and colonize on behalf of a nation. Like a permission slip.
Immune to have a resistance to a disease. Native Americans lacked strong immune systems.
Middle Passage The path between Africa and the Americas, across the Atlantic Ocean that slaves crossed. It was a brutal journey and many died.
African Diaspora The displacement of native African persons, out of African, into other parts of the world. A result of slavery.
Technology Use of scientific knowledge to solve problems
Compass A tool used by sailors to show what direction is north. Invented in the 1100s.
