| population | the total number of people who live in an area, country, or region |
| tenement | a tall building with small apartments |
| demography | the study of how populations change over time |
| identity | the group of characteristics and qualities a person uses to describe themselves |
| morality | the human sense that an idea or action is good or bad |
| spirituality | the belief in a force or supreme deity that impacts human life |
| Patterns of Population | Investigating how populations have lived, migrated, and changed throughout history that can help historians discover patterns . |
| Uses and Abuses of Power | Some leaders use their power to help and improve the lives of others. Some leaders remain greedy and seek to better their own lives, or use their power to hurt others. |
| Worlds of Exchange | Exchanging (or trading) ideas, goods, and services with others has and will continue to be a very important contributor to the success of the United States. |
| Haves and Have-Nots | Nations and people who have access to power, wealth, and natural resources may or may not provide access to those resources for others that do not. This idea has caused divisions in our history. |
| Expressing Identity | All people have their own unique identities. Conflicts can arise when an individual person or group decides that it has the right to dictate the identities of others. |
| Science, Technology, and the Environment | Inventions have been advancing the United States throughout its history. However, many of these inventions have had negatively affected our environment. |
| Spiritual Life and Moral Codes | Every culture has its own spirituality and moral codes that guide and drive how decisions are made. We have certain protections that allow all Americans to live their lives according to their own beliefs. |
