oil one of the main US interests in Southwest Asia (the Middle East) is economic – also known as petroleum, is found in the largest quantities on Earth in and around the Persian Gulf.
anti-semitism Hatred of Jews
Zionism National movement for the return of Jews to their homeland (Israel)
Three main religions in the Middle East Christianity, Islam, Judaism
Persian Gulf War (1990–91), conflict that was triggered by Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait on August 2, 1990.
Invasion of Afghanistan The US invasion of Afghanistan occurred after the September 11 attacks in 2001 to dismantle al-Qaeda and remove the Taliban from power.
Invasion of Iraq This 2003 invasion was due to Iraq’s alleged development of weapons of mass destruction and the link between Saddam Hussein’s government and terrorist organizations (al-Qaeda).
Reason for conflict between Jews/Arabs. Both groups believe they have ancestral claim to the land (Israel).
Holocaust The murder of millions of Jews during WWII.
Taliban A brutal, fundamentalist religious group that held power over most of Afghanistan during the late 1990s.
al-Qaeda A radical Sunni Muslim organization dedicated to the elimination of a Western presence in Arab countries founded by Osama bin Laden.
petroleum An oily, thick, flammable (oil), usually dark-colored liquid that is a form of bitumen or a mixture of various hydrocarbons.
Osama bin Laden Leader of al-Qaeda-He is most well known for his role in masterminding the September 11 attacks, which resulted in the deaths of nearly 3,000 and prompted the United States to initiate the War on Terror.
Saddam Hussein Leader in Iraq who was known for making weapons of mass destruction (he also got them to Al-Qaeda)
Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) A destructive device, such as an explosive or incendiary bomb, rocket, or grenade; A weapon that is designed to cause death or serious injury through toxic or poisonous chemicals.
Result of Ottoman Empire losing WWI The territory (Britain/France) was partitioned.
Desert Storm Another name forthe Persian Gulf War
terrorist/terrorism The use of violence and intimidation in the pursuit of political aims.
United Nations This world organization created the modern state of Israel in 1948.
