TermDefinition
Atom Most basic unit of matter. Makes up all elements
Element Cannot be broken down. Makes up the Periodic Table of Elements
Molecule A group of atoms bonded together
Compound Bonding two or more elements together
Atomic Number Determines the number of protons in an atom
Mass Number Determines the total number of protons and neutrons in the atom
Atomic Weight How much the atom weights
Valence Electron The most outer electron
Electron Orbits the nucleus of the atom. Has a negative charge
Proton Is located in the nucleus of the atom. Has a positive charge
Neutron Is located in the nucleus of the atom. Has a neutral charge
Isotope A different variation of the same element
Radioisotope An unstable isotope. It becomes radioactive
Electron Configuration The distribution of electrons in a atomic or molecular orbits
Bond The attraction between two or more atoms
Polar Bond A bond that creates a positive and negative poles
Nonpolar Bond A bond that has no poles
Hydrogen Bond A bond between a proton and the electronegativity of another atom
Solvent The substance that dissolves in a solute
Solution The product of the solute dissolving the solvent
Solute The substance that dissolves the solvent
Hydrophobic Repels against water
Hydrophilic Attracts water or typically dissolves in water
Amino Acid Are organic substances that creates protein
Nucelotide The building blocks of nucleic acids(DNA or RNA)
Peptide Bond The attraction between two atoms that create a water molecule when the carboxyl group and the amino group combine.
Lipid A biomolecule that stores away energy for later use.
Saturated Fat A fatty acid chain that only has one preliminary bond instead of two or more.
Saccharide A carbohydrate. Also known as sugar
Specific Heat The amount of heat required to warm up a liquid
