Study History Terms

Tools and Challenges to Studying History

QuestionAnswer
Primary Source An account by someone or something that was there when an event happened, idea was made or object created. "First hand"
Secondary Source An account by someone or something that was not present when an event, idea, or object occurred but became informed by someone or something that was. "second hand"
Reliability Means to be trusts and dependable.
Time Span The amount of time that passes between when the event, idea or object happens/created and when the source is made. The shorter the time span generally the more reliable the source.
Author's Background Information about the creator of the source. Who they are, what they do, where they are from, what they believer. This information generally influences the source and shifts point of view. May result in bias.
Bias A favoritism towards or against something or someone in favor of something else.
Opinions/Beliefs The thoughts, ideas and understandings of someone. Generally thought of has facts by that person but can't be proven. Examples:Politics and religions
A.C.a.P. S. A process for analyzing a primary source to determine reliability and what can be learned from it.
"A" in A.C.a.P. S. Author - the creator of the source
"C" in A.C.a.P. S. Context- the when and where a source was created
"a" in A.C.a.P. S. audience- who the source was meant for
"P" in A.C.a.P. S. Purpose- the reason(s) the source was created
"S" in A.C.a.P. S. Significance- the importance and main details or the source
