The Civil War

tributary a stream or small river that feeds into a larger river
ironclad a warship covered with iron plating for protection
casualty a person who is killed, wounded, captured or missing in battle
Emancipation Proclamation decree freeing enslaved people in Confederacy held areas
habeas corpus a legal order, writ, that guarantees a prisoner the right to be heard in court
draft a system that requires able-bodied men to serve in the military
bounty reward or payment
greenback paper money issued by the US govt
entrench to place within a trench, or ditch, for defensive purposes
flank the side or edge of a military formation
resistance refusal to give in
total war targeting not only the military, but the whole society; land and people
