| Montgomery Bus Boycott | A protest to the arrest of Rosa Parks for refusing to give up her seat to a white man on a segregated bus |
| March on Washington | Occurred on August 27, 1963, thousands of Americans headed to Washington for a rally for civil and economic rights for African Americans. On August 28, 1963 at the Lincoln Memorial Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his famous "I Have a Dream" speech. |
| 24th Amendment | This amendment to the US Constitution made poll taxes illegal |
| Affirmative Action | Programs that made special efforts to hire or enroll minorities |
| Roe V. Wade | The US Supreme Court landmark decision to give women abortion rights |
| Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) | This potential amendment to the US Constitution stated, "equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of gender (female) |
| American Indian Movement | A push for equal treatment of American Indians leading to suits for compensation for land and a nationwide unity was established |
| Environmental Protection Agency | A federal agency established to enforce the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act and protect threatened or endangered species |
| Clean Air Act | Set emission standards for cars, and limits for release of air pollutants |
| Clean Water Act | A law that restricted the pollution of water by industry and agriculture |
| Civil Rights Act of 1964 | A federal law that prohibits discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin |
| Voting Rights Act of 1965 | A law that outlawed discriminatory voting practices used to keep African-Americans from voting |
| Sit-ins | Non-violent protests at lunch counters that served only whites, staged by African American students who refused to leave even when they were not served |
| I Have a Dream speech | This speech was delivered by Martin Luther King on August 28, 1963 at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC. Martin Luther King asked for racism in America to end by giving his vision of equality for all Americans. |
| Landmark Ruling | Means that the court makes a decision that significantly changes the way of doing things or a previous law |
| Plessy v. Ferguson | The Supreme Court Case of Plessy v. Ferguson of 1896 said that separate facilities (such as restrooms) for different races were equal. |
| Brown v. Board of Education | A case where 13 parents were asking for their children to be able to attend the school closest to their house instead of a segregated school that was farther away. This was a landmark ruling saying that segregation was a violation to the 14th amendment. |
