Cold War in Latin America Vocabulary Terms

Liberation Theology The belief, common in Latin America in the late 1900’s, that the Roman Catholic Church should be active in the struggle for economic and political equality
Junta A group of leaders who rule jointly
Populist A supporter of the rights of the common people as opposed to the privileged elite
Hyperinflation An extremely high level of inflation that grows rapidly in a short period of time
Shining Path Guerilla group in Peru that terrorized the countryside in the 1980’s and 1990’s
NAFTA A free trade agreement that eliminated tariffs on trade between Mexico, the United States, and Canada
Integrate To blend or join together
Security Freedom from danger or fear
Intervene To enter into an event to affect its outcome
Fidel Castro Communist political leader of Cuba; he helped overthrow the Cuban government in 1959 and seized control of the country, exercising total control of the government and economy
