| Belle Boyd | A spy for the South, informed the Confederate generals about where the Union army was stationed around her home in the Shenendoah Valley. |
| Women in the War | The role of women expanded toi teachers, office workers, government workers, uniform manufacturing, farm management and business. Women would roll bandages, weave blankets, make clothes, and become cooks and nurses to take care of the South. |
| Lives of the Soldiers | Both North and South faced hardships and challenges. In the letters they sent to their loved ones they wrote about feeling bored, sick, fear and the horror of war. Most soldiers lived in camps and the novelty of being a soldier quickly wore off. |
| Ulysses S. Grant | Took over the Amry of the Potomac after George Meade. Main strategy was to throw more people into battle. Eventually would win the war for the North. Asked that the Southern soldiers lay down their guns and go home. |

| Battle of Gettysburg | Started July 1, 1863 lasted three days, began when Union calvary surprised Rebel infantry raiding the town of Gettysburg. The bloodiest battle of the war. The North will win and General Lee will lose all confidence in himself. The turning point. |
| Appomattox Courthouse | A town in Virginia where the South finally surrenderd and the war ended, Lee and his troops were to leave their weapons and go home. |
| Battle of Fredericksburg | Happened on December 13, 1862 in Fredericksburg, VA. The confederate commander was Robert E. Lee and his army won against the northern army led by Ambrose Burnside. After this loss Burnside resigns and is replaced by Joseph Hooker. |
| Army of Northern Virginia | Run by General Robert E. Lee seemed unbeatable and Lee's strategy made him hard to beat. |
| Opposition to war | Politians objected to war time policies. Northern democrats split into two groups: one supported Lincoln, and the other wanted to negotiate with the South. They objected also because the war was beginning to effect everyday life. |
| Gettysburg address | Happened on November 19, 1863. Dedicated a cemetary to soldiers who died in the Battle of Gettysburg. Lincoln presented his two minute speech. His speech encouraged people to look beyond the images of war to what we all had in common. |
| Ambrose Burnside | Clashed with Lee near Fredericksburg, VA. Had the largest army. He replaced McClellan as the leader of the Union Army. Eventually will be replaced with Joseph Hooker. |
| Dorothea Dix | Was a women who organized nurses for hospitals and armies in the north. |
| Loretta Janeta Velazquez | One of the more well known women who disguised herself as a man to fight in the war. Fought for the south in the Battle of Bull Run and at Shiloh. Would later become a spy for the south. |
| George Meade | When Hooker failed Lincoln he replaced Hooker with General George Meade. Was the Union general during the Battle of Gettysburg. Will be replaced with Grant. |
| Clara Barton | Northern woman who was famous for her work with the wounded. Organized women to be nurses on the front line of battle. Eventually would create the Red Cross. |
| Sally Tompkins | Established a hospital in the South for soldiers in Richmond, Virginia. |
| Battle of Vicksburg | The North wins. In it they gained full control of the Mississippi River. Marked a turning point for the war in the west. |
| March to the Sea | Sherman will march the troops from Atlanta, Georgia to Savanah, GA. Along the way he will use total war tactics. He will burn and steal all he can. Creates a psychological war against the south. |
| William Tecumseh Sherman | One of the most successful generals of the North during the war. Will be Grants right hand man in the west and then when he becomes the commander for the whole Norhtern army. |
| Bounty | Money given as a reward such as to encourage enlistment in the army. |
| Inflation | a continuous rise in the price of goods and services. |
| Pickett's Charge | Led by general George Pickett. About 14,000 soldiers advanced across open ground toward the Union lines. They were easy targets for the Union. barely half of the Rebels returned from the charge. Lee knew the battle was lost and they retreated to VA. |
| Joseph Hooker | Devastated by failure, Burnside resigned and was replaced by General Joseph Hooker. Rebuilt the army and in early May 1863 launched a campaign against Lee. Unfortunately, Lee attacked before Hooker was ready. And would lose the battle. |
| Habeas Corpus | a legal order for an inquiry to determine whether a person has been legal imprisoned. |

| Battle of Chancellorsville | Hooker was going to attack Lee and his forces, but Lee attacked him before he was ready. Lee won the battle but the South loses Stonewall Jackson to friendly fire during this battle. |
