Death Valley Dry valley in southern California that has the lowest elevation in North America
Continental Divide Ridge in the Rocky Mountains that divides streams flowing toward the Pacific Ocean from those flowing toward the Atlantic Ocean
Timberline the elevation on a mountain above which trees cannot grow
Rain Shadow the side of a mountain chain that receives less precipitation than the other side
Reforest to plant new trees to replace ones that have been cut down
Livestock animals raised on farms and ranches for human use
Frigid very cold
Tundra a cold, flat area where trees cannot grow
Great Basin Large desert region that covers most of the state of Nevada
Geyser a hot spring that erupts and sends hot water from the earth into the air
Lava molten rock that rises and flows on the surface of the earth
Magma molten rock beneath the surface of the earth
Volcano a type of mountain with an opening through which ash, gas, and lava are forced
