General Horatio Gates An American general who blocked Burgoyne's path to the South during the Battle of Saratoga.
Battle of Saratoga John Burgoyne was on his way from Canada. He was very slow moving It was the turning point of the war.
Juan de Miralles He arrived in Philedelphia in 1778 as a representative of Spain at his urging Spain, Cuba, and Mexico. sent aid to the colonies. Miralles befriended many patriot leaders and lent money to the cause.
recruit to enlist soldiers in the army
mercenary paid soldiers that served in the army of a foreign country the soldiers washington attacked when he crossed the delaware river were german mercenaries in the british army
Loyalists American colonists who remained loyal to Britian and opposed the war for independance
France Announced supposrt for America after the battle of saratoga they sent money, equiptment and troops to the colonies.

Judith Sargeant Murray a woman that argued that womens
Patriots American colonists who stayed loyal to the new Country, America. They were determined to fight the British until American independence was won. The allies for America were France and Spain.
Margaret Corbin A woman who fought with the patriot forces. her husband dies in battle so she too ikhis place. Margaret Corbin also accompanied her husband in battle.
Bernardo de Galvez Spanish governor of Louisianna. He raised an army and his troops forced the British troops from Baton Rouge and Natchez. He wanted to divert British attention away from the northern colonies.
Casimir Pulaski An officer from the Polish army. Came over to train the American calvary.
Friedrich von Steuben A former officer from Germany, came to help Washington, trained the troops at Valley Forge, made the troops more disciplined and more efficient.
Neutral taking no side in a conflict.
Molly Pitcher When her husband died at the Battle of Monmouth she took his place and fired his canon. Soldiers called her "Moll of the Pitcher" because she carried water to the soldiers.
Abigail Adams The wife of John Adams, a leader in the independence movement. Abigail wrote letters to her family and friends she left records of her thought about the revolution. She shared her ideas of equality with her husband.
Nathan Hale Of Swedish descent, he disquised himself as a school teacher and spied for the Patriots in the Battle of Long Island. Will eventually be caught and killed.
Battle of Long Island Patriots will lose New York City to the British. Nathan Hale will be considered a hero. Now the British have the excellent port and harbor. Will make it easier for them to get troops and supplies.
Spain Will become an ally for the Patriots. Going to send over money and troops.
Thaddeus Kosciusko He was a an Engineer from Polonad that will contribute to the war efforts. Will help with the army.
Valley Forge Patriot camp for the winter outside of Philadelphia. Here the men will lack the basic materials for survival and many will desert.
Deborah Sampson Disguised herself as a man and fought in the war.
General William Howe Was the leader of the British Army in the American colonies. Is going to be the leader in the battle of Long Island. Also will be one of the three that was planning to attack Albany, NY. Will not make it out of Philadelphia.
Trenton and Princeton Christmas night 1776 Washington will cross the Delaware River and attack the British in the town of Trenton and further down in Princeton. Will completely surprise the British. Capture more than 900 Hessian mercenaries.
Peter Salem One of the 5,000 African Americans soldiers who fought with the Patriot forces.
Lemuel Hayes Fought for the same reasons as other Americans. Believed in the Patriot causes. One of the 5,000 African Americans who ran away from their master to fight for the war.
Capture of Philadelphia Howe planned to take Philadelphia, the American capitol, before marching to Albany. Captured the city and forced the Continental Congress to flee the city.
British plan for Victory The British wanted to capture Albany, New York. They would control trade on the Hudson river and but the colonies in half.
Benedict Arnold Connecticutt militia captain. Took part in capturing Fort Ticonderoga with Ethan Allen. Halted British general Barry St. Ledger from advancing east to Albany. Eventually will turn traitor and fight for the British.
Green Mountain Men Run by Ethan Allen. And will stop the British leader Burgoyne from getting to Albany.
Marquis de Lafayette Spent the winter at Valley Forge, French nobleman who wanted to fight for liberty and freedom. Bought a boat, raised an army and then came to fight with Washington. Became one of Washington's most trusted aides.
