What is the origin and meaning of the word SMERSH, which was coined by Stalin? SMERSH is a combination of the two Russian words Smert and Shpionam, and it means, "Death to Spies."
What was the Iron Curtain? The Iron Curtain was a nickname for the barrier the Soviet Union built to seal themselves off from the outside world.
What's a "Cold War?" A Cold War is hostility between two countries characterized by threats, propaganda, and proxy wars. However, the two countries involved in a Cold War never directly participate in war.
What was De-Stalinization and who instigated it? De-Stalinization was the policy of eradicating memory and influence of Stalin. It was instigated by Khrushchev.
What Proxy War did both the U.S. and the Soviet Union participate in? When did it start? The Korean War. It started June 27, 1950.
Who was Josip Broz? Josip Broz was a Communist Dictator that kept Yugoslavia from becoming a Soviet Satellite by fighting against Stalin.
What was the Berlin Blockade? The Berlin Blockade was a blockade the Soviets built that stopped Allied railways and roads from coming into Berlin.
What was the Doctors' Plot? The Doctors' Plot was when Stalin framed many Jewish doctors in an attempt to instigate fear of the Jews into Russian minds.
How did Stalin's paranoia of being assassinated effect his late life? Stalin's paranoia pushed him to constantly up his security, trust nobody, and self medicate/diagnose, which likely effected his health negatively. His paranoia also caused him to go a little bit crazy.
How many people died in the Korean War? (Within 100,000 is ok) About 1,284,000 people died in the Korean War. (This is a combination of ALL the casualties during the war)
