| Battle of Shiloh | Grant's army camped along Tennessee river waiting for reinforcements, General Johnson attacks first, but Union army launches a counter attack and wins, showed that Grant was willing to pay whatever price to achieve his goal |
| Battle of Antietam (September of 1862) | Union victory (technically a draw) General Lee hopes to earn foreign recognition and bring border states into the war. But, Lee retreats to Virginia and Lincoln prepares for Emancipation Proclamation, chance for foreign recognition is lost |
| Battle of Gettysburg (Turning point in war) | Union victory, General Lee hoped to win a victory on Union soil, but failed, lost a third of his army and was forced to retreat to Virginia. The Confederacy never again tried to invade the North |
| Battle of Vicksburg (July 4th, 1863) (Turning point in war) | Union victory, General Grant sieged the last city on the mississippi river controlled by confederates from the west and wins complete control over the Mississippi river, cutting the Confederacy in half |
| Sherman's March to the Sea | From the west, William T. Sherman lead a march through the South, invaded Georgia, captured and burned down Atlanta and captured Savannah destroying railroad tracks and food stores on his way |
| Surrender at Appotomax (April 9th, 1865) | Lee knew that with Sherman heading up North and Grant starving Richmond, the war was over. Lee retreats into the mts but is cut off by Grant. General Lee surrenders, Lincoln is killed several days later by John Wilkes Booth in Ford's Theater |
| Gettysburg Address | Written to honor the soldiers who died at Gettysburg, Lincoln explained that the Union's purpose for the war was to protect and expand freedom |
| General Grant's major victories | Grant led his troops through the battles of wilderness, spotsylvania and cold harbor, forcing Lee to retreat towards Richmond. Grant then sieged Petersburg and cut off supply for the Confederates with a goal of starving them out of Richmond |
