Concepts

TermDefinition
Prohibition Became the law in 1920 and made the purchasing and selling of alcohol illegal.
Jazz Age The name given to the era of the 1920's and 1930's because of the popularity of jazz music.
Xenophobia An unreasonable fear
Discrimination Negative behaviors directed at a specific group of people.
Prejudice A negative learned attitude toward a group of people.
Racism Discrimination directed at a specific racial group.
Nativism The belief that "native born Americans" were superior to immigrants.
Segregation The rule or practice of separating people of different races
Courting To be involved with someone romantically.
The Age of Intolerance An era from the 1920s and 1930s when many things were not tolerated such as alcohol
Curse of the Bambino Babe Ruth was traded to the Red Sox and then the Red Sox lost the World Series year after year into the 21st century. This was called the "Curse of the Bambino."
Fad An intense and widely shared enthusiasm for something that is usually short-lived.
Immigration Quotas Laws that passed which set limits on how many people from specific countries would be admitted to the United States.
