Reconstruction The process of rebuilding the South after the Civil War
House Divided The comparison Lincoln used to describe the division between the North and the South
Loyalty Being faithful and true
Freedmen's Bureau An organization established by the federal government to help freed slaves
13th Amendment Ended slavery in all of the United States
14th Amendment Gave all African Americans born in the United States citizenship
15th Amendment Gave African American men the right to vote
Sharecropping a system in which landowners let poor farmers use small areas of their land, and , in return, the farmers gave the landowners a share of the the crop
Segregation the forced separation of the races
Jim Crow Laws laws that segregated African Americans from other Americans
Carpetbaggers the nickname southerns gave to Northerners who moved to the South after the Civil War
