Arms Control A limiting of the number of weapons that each nation may have.
Atomic bomb 1. A bomb with enormous power to harm.2. a powerful weapon used on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki that ended WWII.
Capitalism An economic and political system characterized by a free market for goods and services, and private control of production and consumption.
Communism 1. A form of political and economic system that abolishes private ownership. 2. A type of government where the government tells the people what they do for a living and the gov. takes care of the people
Cuban Missile Crisis 1. USSR was putting missiles in Cuba in order to threaten the US JFK blockades Cuba, USSR removes missiles, height of cold war tension.2. Incident that occurred in 1961 when it was discovered the Soviets were planning to put nuclear warheads in Cuba
Diplomacy 1. Negotiation between nations. 2. in world politics, the art of managing relationships between nations
Embargo (n.) an order forbidding the trade in or movement of commercial goods; any restraint or hindrance; (v.) to forbid to enter or leave port; to forbid trade with
Fascism 1. A political theory advocating an authoritarian hierarchical government (as opposed to democracy or liberalism).. A political theory with a dictator in complete control
Guerrilla 1. A member of an irregular armed force that fights a stronger force by sabotage and harassment. 2. A person engaged in irregular warfare.
Imperialism 1. The practice of conquering other lands, forming colonies in other lands, or controlling the government and wealth of weaker lands. 2. Cause of WWI; strong nation takes over weak nations.
Korean War 1. Conflict over the future of the Korean peninsula, fought between 1950 and 1953 ending in stalemate. 2. A war in the 1950s in which North Korea invaded South Korea to make Korea a unite Communist nation.
Militarism 1. Aggressiveness that involves the threat of using military force. 2. European leaders built up their nations's armies before WWI because they believed that a nation needed a large military
Muckraker 1. One who spreads real or alleged scandal about another (usually for political advantage).2. journalist of the late 1800s to early 1900s who tried to alert the public to wrongdoings by politicians and big business
New Deal 1. A plan to end the Depression. 2. U.S. president Franklin Roosevelt's economic reform program designed to solve the problems created by the Great Depression.
Proxy War A conflict fought by two sides who are supported by two other, more powerful enemies who are involved in a larger struggle.
Social security 1. America's government pension program, established as part as part of the New Deal in 1935. . 3. Social Security provides income for workers after they have retired
Stock market 1. A system for buying or selling a small piece of ownership in a company. 2. An organization in which shares of stock in a company are bought and sold.
Tet Offensive 1. Massive offensive by North Vietnamese that aimed it clear to the US that the Communists were not going to give up easy. 2. The January 1968 attack by vietcong and North Vietnamese forces on more than 100 cities and towns throughout South Vietnam.
Vietnam War A war between South Vietnam and North Vietnam that lasted from 1954 to 1973 when North Vietnam defeated South Vietnam and reunited the two Vietnams.
federalism 1. shared power between national and state government 2. A system of government where power is shared among the Federal government and the states.
