Langston Hughes An influential African American poet, social activist, novelist, playwright, and columnist during the Harlem Renaissance.
Franklin D Roosevelt U.S. President from 1933 to 1945, known for his New Deal Programs during the Great Depression and his leadership during WWII.
Herbert Hoover U.S. President from 1929 to 1933, known for his reluctance to use the power of the federal government against the conditions of the Great Depression.
Jacob Riis An American newspaper reporter, social reformer, and photographer who, with his 1890 book" How the Other Half Lives." The book shocked his readers with factual descriptions of slum conditions in New York City.
Homer Plessy An African American man that was arrested for refusing to sit in the "colored" train car. The arrest led to a landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision in 1896 that upheld the constitutionality of racial segregation under the “separate but equal” doctrine.
Henry Ford An American industrialist and founder of the Ford Motor Company that sponsored the development of the assembly line technique of mass production.
Upton Sinclair An American novelist, essayist, playwright, and social reformer. In 1906 his novel "The Jungle," exposed the horrible conditions of the U.S. meat-packing industry.
Ida Tarbell An American writer, investigative journalist, lecturer and one of the leading muckrakers of the Progressive Era. She is best known for her classic The History of the Standard Oil Company (1904).
Woodrow Wilson U.S. President from 1913 to 1921 and led America through World War I advocating for democracy and world peace.
