2. Freedman Former slaves who often served as soldiers
3. Confederate States of America Southern states that seceded from the Union
4. Conscripted drafted - when someone is forced to join the military
5. Emancipation the freeing of slaves
6. Casualties People killed, wounded, captured or missing
7. Blockade Use of a naval force to stop shipping; what the North did to Southern Ports
8 . Border States Slave states between the deep South and the Northern states
9. Total War involves all the people and resources of a society
10. The Hunley a Confederate submarine that sunk the the Union ship Housatonic. The first submarine to successfully sink a ship.
11. Jefferson Davis President of the Confederacy
12. Robert E. Lee General of the Confederate States of America who was from Virginia
13. Ulysses S. Grant Union general who captured Vicksburg, Mississippi successfully cutting the Confederacy in two (The Anaconda Plan)
14. William T. Sherman Union Colonel who led a march through the South
15. Robert Smalls A slave who planned the heist of of "The Planter", a Confederate ship that was surrendered to the Union Navy.
