What countries did the US have issues with after the War of 1812? Britain and Spain
What was the Rush-Bagot Agreement? That was an agreement that banned the presence of naval ships in the Great Lakes.
What issues did the US have with the British after the War of 1812? There were issues over fishing rights as well as the presence of naval ships in the Great Lakes.
How was the fishing rights issues resolved? It was resolved at the Convention of 1818, that is a treaty. This said that Britain agreed to grant the US fishing rights off of the coasts of the Newfoundland and Labrador.
What did the Convention of 1818 result in? It resolved the fishing rights issue and it set the border between the US and Canada.
What is the border between US and Canada? The border is at 49' N latitude as far west as the Rocky Mountains.
What were the issues with Spain after the War of 1812? There was disputes over the Florida and Georgia border.
What was president resolved the dispute over the Florida and Georgia border? President James Monroe
What did James Monroe do about the disputes? He sent Andrew Jackson and his troops to secure the Fla-Ga border. He also was meant to deal with the Seminole Indians who were taking in runaway slaves and raiding US settlements.
What did Jackson and his troops do? Jackson's troops crossed into Florida to capture Seminole raiders, they took over most of Spain's military posts, and overthrew the Spanish governor.
What was wrong about what Jackson did? He was working alone and without the approval of President Monroe.
What treaty settled border disputes between the US and Spain?
It settled border disputes between the US and Spain and it gave East FL to the US.
What did the US also do around this time? The US gave up claims to Texas and paid Spain $5 million dollars.
Who was James Monroe? The 5th president
What happened to Latin America in Monroe's presidency? The nations of Latin America began revolts to become independent from their European colonizers.
Who is Simon Bolivar?
When did Mexico gain its independence? In the year of 1821
What did Monroe want is ensure since all of these colonies were becoming independent? Monroe wanted to ensure that the Western Hemisphere was free of colonization.
What did Monroe do to ensure that no more colonization was going to happen in the Western Hemisphere? He issued the Monroe Doctrine.
What is the Monroe Doctrine and what did it say? US would not interfere in European affairs, would recognize and not interfere with already existing European colonies in the Americas, there would be not more colonizing in US. any new colonies were considered war.
What did the Monroe Doctrine set? The Monroe Doctrine set a precedent for all future US foreign policy in Latin America.
