What is the Teller Amendment? United States will help Cuba gain their freedom from Spain but will not annex the island
Who were the Rough Riders? Volunteer cavalry (soldiers) regiment led by Theodore Roosevelt that were supported by a group of African American Soldiers called Buffalo Soldiers
What is Isolationism? Policy of isolating one’s country from others
Who is Theodore Roosevelt? Leader of the Rough Riders. President of the United States. Said “Speak Softly but Carry a Big Stick”. Panama Canal was on the top of his priorities
What is Imperialism? Policy of expanding one’s power over another nation either through diplomacy or through military intervention
What is Yellow Journalism? American newspapers reporting sensational stories against the Spanish (both true and untrue)
What is the White Man's Burden? Racist belief that the United States specifically white Americans have a right to help foreign nations develop and bring them the ideas of civilization
Why did Theodore Roosevelt want the Panama Canal to be built? To have naval power in the Atlantic and Pacific. The Canal would be a hub of world trade.
How did Theodore Roosevelt get the Panama Canal to be built? Theodore Roosevelt tried to get Colombia to create the Panama Canal. They refused. Theodore Roosevelt encouraged Panama to rebel against Colombia.
What lands did we steal? Hawaii and Panama
What land did we purchase? Alaska
What lands did we get from the Spanish American War? Philippines, Puerto Rico, Guam
What is the Open Door Policy? Cut China up into Spheres (pieces) and it opened China up to the world.
Why is the Spanish American War called the "Splendid Little War"? Less than 400 American soldiers died in battle and the war only lasted 6 weeks.
What is the USS Maine? A United States warship the blew up in Cuba. The newspapers blamed the Spanish for the explosion. The explosion was really caused by something internal.
Why would the United States want to be isolated? To avoid war, disease, and a belief that other countries can govern themselves.
Why would the United States want to go out and imperialize other nations? To get more resources, more markets to trade their goods in, more power and White Man's Burden.
